The Pushkar Camel fair is held in November each year. Its one of the biggest fairs in which cattle, horses and camels are sold, decorated and raced. Last year 50,000 camels were sold, raced and decorated.
During this time, offerings are paid to the only Brahma temple (Hindu God, who created the Universe) in India. Devotes take a dip in Lake Pushkar. The fame of the fair has spread and now it’s also a major tourist destination.
Lake Pushkar is known to have been created when a lotus flower fell from the hand of Lord Brahma. A dip in the lake is considered to be very holy.
The lake has 52 bathing ghats where devotees can take a dip in the lake.
The Pushkar fair is a lace where many traders set up shop to sell textiles, brassware, beads, ropes and other assorted household goods are sold.
There are more than 400 temples around the area, which the tourists can also see. There are many handicrafts that make for great shopping. Many tourists come here to purchase many of the ethnic handicrafts.
There are many tour operators who organize the Camel Safari in Pushkar, be sure to book well in advance as November is a peak season for tourism in Rajasthan. Its 11 km from Ajmer and can be easily reached by bus or car.
The nearest railroad head is Ajmer, which is connected to Delhi. The nearest Airport is at Jaipur which is 131 kms from here. Ajmer is a major pilgrimage centre for Muslims but many non Muslims also visit the shrine and seek blessings.
